Nonviolent Measures

Security has become the prominent issue in American foreign policy. As we enter a new century, America is faced with new threats to our security. What is the nature of these threats and how can we deal with them? Colorado College and Air Force Academy will debate the roles of violent and nonviolent solutions to the dilemma of global security in the 21st century.

Tuesday, December 13, 7:30 p.m. at McHugh Commons

Education, the Institute, and the Self

Philosophy professor John Riker will speak and facilitate dialogue on the values and structures of modern education and their implications upon society and the self. His talk will focus on scientific evidence displaying the peaceful and positive effects of meditation. While the powerful concentrate on the dangers of nuclear wars and a crashing world economy, they are neglecting to notice a much greater threat to their power and position. The unrest and growing desperation of the poor could cause a world-wide upheaval that would repeat history as demonstrated by the first American Revolution, the overthrow of the monarchy in France, the Communist takeover of Russia, and the South African rebellion which led to the changes in the political landscape there. Political changes are in the wind in every nation of the world as a more intelligent and better educated working class realize that a mere subsistence is not enough and they determine to gain their freedom and opportunities for a better life.

  Animation: Hide & Go Secret
by Mark Fiore
The adventures of Knuckles the torturer.

  Video: Documenting a Smear
from Think Progress
The Lying Administration's campain to smear the truth-tellers, and then cover it up.

  Fun Video: Bushzilla
from Jay Leno
Japanese TV sees Bush in a different light.

This Date in History:

In 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger was sworn into his first and last term as governor of Cahli-phoney-ah.

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) is 71 today.

DNC Chair Howard Dean is 57.

Today's Quote:

"So much torture, bloodshed, deceit. The credibility he earned in Watergate is now officially all used up.

Scooter's Libby's lawyers are proclaiming that the news that Stephen Hadley leaked Plame-Wilson's CIA identity to Bob Woodward (though a NY Times article today suggests the leaker was Cheney) somehow exonerates Libby from the charges of perjuring himself to FBI investigators about his own involvement, even though his own notes prove he lied to them. Yeah, he can try insulting the jury with that one.

The good news, of course, is that Hadley now implicates Condoleeza Rice, whom he worked for at the time of the leak.

Bad news: Jonah Goldberg, who the LA Times replaced Robert Scheer with in their goostep march to the extreme right, has his first column today. GOP mafia boss Jack Abramoff bribed almost 3 dozen congressmen, on just one project.

Dr. Evil sneaks immunity for pharmaceutical companies into new legislation.

Message to Sony: Burn in Hell!

Blessed Be the War Mongers?

On the anniversary of Nixon's "I am not a crook!" speech, Cheney outdoes him, declaring he didn't lie us into war!

Cheney also has declared that he's not bound by the same rules as everyone else. Now aren't you glad we brought them "equality"?

I don't believe in Intelligent Design, I believe in Malevolent Design. You have this Eternal, Ominipotent being. All things are possible to it, and it can never die. So, what's the Diety do, but invent DEATH! Design a system where every being must die. Death as the very engine that keeps the entire system running. That's not Intelligent Design, that's Malevolent Design. If there is a Creator, it must be pure Evil.

Denver Police beat man to death, because his brother is an activist fighting police brutality.

Tues: free screening: the movie Wal-Mart doesn't want you to
see

What: Free Screening, Open to the Public
Frist immediately went on camera spitting venom, saying "this is absolutely unprecidented." Um, except the Republicans did it SIX times trying to impeach Clinton. Oh well, everyone knows a Republican couldn't tell the truth if his life depended on it.

Basically, the Repugs on the Senate Intelligence Committee have been giving the Dems the run-around for a year and a half, refusing to actually investigate the White House lies that led to the Iraq war. When they again claimed yesterday that it couldn't be discussed "because it contains classified information," Reid called their bluff and invoked Rule 21, allowing classified information to be discussed behind closed doors.

Finally, Democrats have an issue: Treason committed by the White House, and a conspiracy by Republicans on the Senate Intelligence committee to cover it up.

What's more Reid has shown that if it comes to "nuclear winter", he can do it without looking like an obstructionist, but rather casting suspiscion on the Republicans.

Let's hope he has the cajones to keep this up.

WHEELS OF JUSTICE Bus Tour in Colorado Springs October 30-31

Sunday, October 30, 2005, Est. 12:00 noon arrival until 5:00 pm

  Photo Exhibits, Presentations, Interviews, Lectures

Toons Film and Music parking lot, 802 North Nevada Avenue (NW corner of Nevada and Dale Street)

Meet and greet visiting peacemakers, Candy Lovett, Bea Dewing, Ellen O_Grady, Dan Winters

  (Please see speaker bios below.)

  Sunday, October 30, 2005, 5:00-7:00 PM

  Potluck Dinner and Conversation

Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission, 214 East Vermijo Avenue, Colorado Springs

Please bring a side-dish to share! She remains involved with the local Veterans For Peace in Gainesville, FL as well as works as a counselor for the GI Rights Hotline (800-394-9544). In addition, Dewing worked for both U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Labor. She holds degrees in computer science and government and politics. From housing activism and advocacy to local peace group coordinating and environmental activism to organizing a support group for abused women, Bea Dewing_s resume as a peace and human rights activist is too long to list.

In 2003, in Palestine, Bea Dewing accompanied Palestinian farmers, medical workers, school and community groups in nonviolent resistance to Israeli occupation. One of those people was Eric Verlo, a local businessman who owns TOONS, a video store near Colorado College, on property owned by the college.

After returning, Eric allowed the group to set up Camp Casey - Colorado Springs in his parking lot, an anti war protest that included a memorial to fallen US soldiers.

Yesterday Eric told me that he had been ORDERED to tear down the camp, and would be evicted for this protest.

The message is clear: protest the war, and we will destroy your business.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDITORIAL CONTACT:
Dave Therault
719-459-6471

PRESS CONFERENCE/RALLY
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2005
1 PM
802 NORTH NEVADA AVENUE
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO

Colorado Springs -- Wednesday afternoon, a property management company
representing the Colorado College demanded the demolition of Camp Casey
Colorado Springs, which was established on September 15 on land leased from
the college by a local film and music store.

The peace camp was established by a group of Colorado Springs veterans and
peace activists which traveled in August to Camp Casey in Crawford (TX) to
stand outside of George W. Bush's ranch with Cindy Sheehan in protest of the
war on Iraq. During the past six weeks, the camp has hosted a memorial of
1900 crosses and been used as staging area for peace actions, rallies,
counter-recruitment in area high schools, and an art gallery.

"We have been sleeping in tents and maintaining our vigil for close to two
months now," said Eric Verlo, proprietor of Toons Film and Music, which
leases the property from Colorado College, and who was with the group
traveling to Crawford. "Given the vehemence of the demand, this appears to
be an attack on our first amendment rights," he added. "I would guess that
we wouldn't have heard from the college administrators if I had put in a
outdoor reading café for my customers, rather than a peace park."

Verlo also said he was informed by the Colorado College property management
of the college's intention to file for immediate eviction action on his
business, and to use his employees to forcibly remove the camp site. "He
told me that 'several voices from the Colorado College administration' had
complained about the presence of the peace camp," said Verlo, "and told me
in very angry terms to tear down the peace camp. At one point he threatened
to have workers come and tear it down if we don't remove it immediately."

The camp organizers are gathering at 1:00 PM Thursday, October 27 at the
camp site, 802 North Nevada (Dale and Nevada) to reply to the demands made
by the Colorado College.

http://www.iraqwarmemorial.info

Say goodbye to Ms. Miers. Justice nominee was involved in coverup of Dubya's missing National Guard service.

Mt. He also says that Fort Carson lacks adequate psychiatric care for soldiers, a claim the post disputes.

Tuesday, about a dozen protesters, including some representing Iraq Veterans Against the War and Veterans for Peace, briefly picketed City Hall, then opened up on the mayor in the council chambers.

Dave Therault, who called the mayor’s reversal “belittling and offensive,” told Rivera his actions would stop veterans from seeking help.

Mark Wilkerson, a veteran who served in Iraq with a unit from Fort Hood, Texas, criticized Rivera’s decision, saying soldiers won’t seek help from the Army because they fear reprisal.

Rivera said he backs programs to help soldiers, but the good intentions of Operation Just One are muddied by Robinson, and Georg-Andreas “Andrew” Pogany, a former Fort Carson soldier who was once charged with cowardice before he was medically discharged from the Army in 2004.

“It’s difficult to separate the service providers who would volunteer their time to help soldiers and the people who organize this — Steve Robinson and Andrew Pogany,” he said.

The two organizers said they aren’t anti-war or anti-Army. Both are veterans who served in Iraq, Robinson in 1991 and Pogany in 2003.

Pogany said he sees the Just One program as a tool to help soldiers get back into the fight.

“But say anything, particularly about mental-health concerns and the cost of the war, and you are associated with being anti-war and anti-Establishment,” Pogany said.

Representative Merrifield "disappointed" in Mayor's lack of support for PTSD treatment
October 10, 2005
For Immediate Release
Contact: Mark Lewis

Colorado Springs, October 10, 2005 -- In a reaction to the unexpected withdrawal of support by Mayor Lionel Rivera for pro bono mental health cooperative, Operation Just One, an alliance of veterans and peace activists will protest on Tuesday, October 11, at 12:30 PM, at City Hall. 8 veterans and active military will join a coalition of groups and individuals to hold a press conference on the steps of City Hall to announce their opposition to Mayor Rivera's actions. Individuals will then air their views during the scheduled City Council meeting public comments segment.

Initially, Rivera came out with a strong endorsement of the program, established by Andrew Pogany a veteran of the Iraq war. A September 26 press release from Rivera's office announced that he would sign a proclamation announcing Combat Operational Stress/PTSD Awareness Day at the Operation Just One kickoff, Friday at the El Pomar Penrose House. Rivera retracted his statement within one day of news reporting of his announcement, citing issues with the language of the proclamation, which he said could he not verify.

Representative Michael Merrifield, expressed his disappointment with Mayor Rivera's withdrawal of support, saying, "Post traumatic stress disorder is a real and proven problem among veterans of the Iraq war, and every other war, for that matter."

In noting that Mayor Rivera has politicized the issue, representative Merrifield said, "Treatment for PTSD is not and should not be controversial or political. Any opportunity to provide treatment for soldiers suffering from PTSD should be encouraged, not discouraged.", he added.

"I am disappointed that Mayor Rivera felt it necessary to withdraw his support for this program that I am positive will be of great benefit to our soldiers who have served in Iraq."

Local activist, Dave Therault, critical of Rivera's move to distance himself from the community-based effort, noted that the statements which Rivera said he could not verify come directly from the Veteran's Administration National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. "His office either lacks the wherewithal to do a simple web search," said Therault, "or the mayor does not consider the VA's own publications to be representative of the the causes and effects of PTSD."

Therault also noted that the timing and finality of Rivera's retraction raises the question of influence on the mayor's office by Ft. Carson officials. "The Army's position is that the mental health services offered at Ft. Carson are sufficient to the needs of the soldiers, along with the official position of downplaying and even repressing GAO reports on PTSD," said Therault. "The mayor maintained a strong endorsement and planned participation in the program from Monday until Thursday, and then completely reversed himself immediately after the the media reported his planned proclamation," Therault added.

"Based on the flimsiest of arguments, the mayor now questions the need for this outreach to soldiers and families, apparently because his father, a combat veteran, had no psychological problems."

Local veterans who have been promoting Operation Just One are dismayed at Rivera's reversal and shunning of the effort. Jim Beckenhaupt, combat veteran of the Vietnam war, and member of Veterans for Peace, noting that the mental health program at Ft. Carson consists of six free counseling sessions, asked, "How can you heal the battle trauma our soldiers have seen in six counseling sessions?" Beckenhaupt believes that a community-based program, such as Operation Just One, functioning as it does, outside of of the military, is essential. Jim will speak at the press conference and to City Council.

"It is difficult for a soldier to ask for help internally and within his own company," said Beckenhaupt. "The soldier's fear is that if word gets out of his treatment for psychological issues, his superiors and his peers will lose trust in him." Observing that this was the mayor's original position, Beckenhaupt asked, "Why has he backed away from it?"

Beckenhaupt also sees a potential role for Operation Just One in helping a combat veteran return to civilian life. "The Army's purpose is to prepare the soldier to return to battle," he said. "The veteran needs concerned professionals to help him with long-term healing."

Vietnam combat Veteran, Patrick Badovinac explained the resistance to therapy this way, "The Army doesn't reload ammo, so when they've used that human bullet, they have no further use for it."

Pallas Stanford, chaplain at the Colorado Springs Camp Casey Peace Park, also expressed extreme disappointment with the Mayor's actions. "I want our veterans and their families to feel that Colorado Springs is doing everything possible to support them," she said. "Instead, the mayor's actions suggest that seeking and finding help within our community is somehow an unpatriotic indictment of the military."

Noting that some mental health professionals have withdrawn their support from Operation Just One, Stanford said, "Again, as for soldiers and their families, what impact can the mayor's actions have other than to increase the stigma and other obstacles to treatment that they already face?" She added, "The mayor's message tells everyone, including the soldier, that his or her needs are not valid."

"Operation Just One presented an opportunity for the mayor to show a real and substantive support for the troops," said Therault. "In turning his back on the program, he has failed the troops."

BACKGROUND:

Veterans Administration publications:
http://www.ncptsd.va.gov/publications/cq/v2/n1/harkness.html
